Breakout 2B: Human Beings 2.0: A Christian Response to the Transhumanism Movement

Advances in genetic engineering and brain-computer interfaces make it possible to treat a number of debilitating diseases and injury, mitigating significant human suffering. But these technologies also provide the gateway to enhance human physical, intellectual, and psychological capabilities. This emerging capability gives credibility to an intellectual and cultural movement called transhumanism, which has a religious character to it. In fact, more radical proponents of transhumanism see technology as the path to eternal life.

What should the Christian response be to these emerging biotechnologies that simultaneously hold promise and peril? How can Christians effectively engage our culture regarding these issues? This session will propose a framework to help Christians address these questions, and in doing, so stand with confidence for the dignity and sanctity of human life.
